Board Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Meeting called to order – by President Wendy Buchanan at 6:33 pm in the Hazelwood Elementary Library. Quorum present – see attached list of members in attendance. Introductions of all present were made.
Minutes from General Meeting on June 5, 2007 – by Deborah Johnson for Tricia Wharton (previous secretary) were reviewed. No changes were made. Deirdre Lempert moved to accept the minutes as read. Motion approved.
Remembrance of 9/11 observed.
Principal’s report - Sally Colburn. Current enrollment is 540 students. The theme this year is “Orcas Unite”. Ms. Krantz and Ms. Colburn are holding bully prevention sessions in classrooms this year. Dana Poppe returns as a Kindergarten teacher. Fire drill held 9/11, earthquake drill to be held 9/12, and intruder drill to be held 9/13. Intruder/lockdown plan handed out – included in secretary’s binder. Great start to the year – car circle pick up working fine.
Treasurer’s report - Michelle Murphy – financial statement for August 2007 included in secretary’s binder. $10,000 and $7,000 cd’s opened to earn higher interest rate. Reimbursement forms should be turned in within 30 days for a more accurate record of cash flow.
President’s report - Wendy Buchanan. PTA and the Law seminar on 9/20/07 – Wendy Buchanan, Michelle Murphy, Deborah Johnson, and Clark Crace to attend. Open positions: Co-President, Co-Treasurer, Sock Hop Committee Co-Chair, Hospitality Chair, Math & Science Night Chair. Tricia Wharton is the building rep for PTA. Simple Majority campaign discussed – election on 11/6/07.
Committee Reports:
Membership - Deirdre Lempert. Theme is “Discovering Endless Possibilities”. Envelopes will be in teacher’s boxes before Open House on 9/26/07. Lori Morse will be working with Deirdre. Deadline is 10/25/07.
5th Grade Events - Cheri Betts.
v Movie Night 11/2/07 to feature “High School Musical II” or “Ratatouille” – can now show PG movies. Parents must stay for the show – no drop offs.
v Cookie Dough – sale starts 9/18/07 and ends 10/2/07.
v Craft Fair concessions – 11/3/07.
v Bingo Night concessions – spring 2008.
v Big turn out at 5th Grade parents meeting held 9/6/07.
ORCA Reading begins 10/1/07.
Skate Nights organized by Karen Kearney. Four nights this year from 6-8 pm.
Walk-a-thon - Gretchen Tapp. Jodee Weeldreyer to co-chair. Seafair Pirates to help at kick-off assembly 9/13/07. Packets handed out by 9/14/07, walk on 10/11/107, and money due by 11/2/07. Winning class gets pizza party with the Seafair Pirates.
Book Fair - Aubrey Poggioli and Milly Flores. Fall Fair 10/29/07 thru 11/2/07. Smaller items to be laminated to poster board to help prevent theft problems. Switching from custom package we normally get to premium to get better profit and less cases of product. List will be reviewed with librarian to be sure we gave what students want. Library to get $50 credit for books. Want to help teachers get more for their wish lists.
Reflections - Renee Watling. Flyers to be out next week. Projects due 10/23/07, judging done by Thanksgiving, visual works to be displayed in December, and all to be submitted to district in January.
Craft Fair - Tammy Lehman. Booth orders coming in slowly.
Website - Samantha Utley. Please notify her of changes and additions - need as much information as possible.
T-Shirts - Samantha Utley. T-shirts – screen printed - $8-$9, sweatshirts – embroidered - $25. White and blue with Orca whale, no year, available after walk-a-thon to not conflict with t-shirt prize incentive, but before conferences.
Yearbook will be on sale 9/20/07 to 10/4/07 for $10. It will be on sale again for a higher price after the beginning of the year.
Old business: none.
Calendar reviewed – included in secretary’s binder.
v 10/8/07 – Art Week with possible Art Night too much for this year – maybe next year.
v 10/23/07 – end of membership drive.
